Cheney Plays Fire?

So amusing a thing, vice-president Cheney unintentionally shot and left his fellow hunter Harry Whittington wounded during their weekend quail hunting trip in Texas. Cheney Plays Fire? Hehe

Cheney accidentally shoots fellow hunter

Harry Whittington, a millionaire attorney from Austin, was in stable condition in the intensive care unit of a Corpus Christi hospital Sunday, said Yvonne Wheeler, spokeswoman for the Christus Spohn Health System.

The accident occurred Saturday at a ranch in south Texas where the vice president and several companions were hunting quail. It was not reported publicly by the vice president's office for nearly 24 hours, and then only after it was reported locally by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times on its Web site Sunday.

Katharine Armstrong, the ranch's owner, said Sunday that Cheney was using a 28-guage shotgun and that Whittington was about 30 yards away when he was hit in the cheek, neck and chest.

Each of the hunters was wearing a bright orange vest at the time, Armstrong told reporters at the ranch about 60 miles southwest of Corpus Christi. She said Whittington was "alert and doing fine."

'Vice president didn't see him'

Armstrong told The Associated Press that emergency personnel traveling with Cheney tended to Whittington before an ambulance -- routinely on call because of the vice president's presence -- took him to the hospital.

Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice president met with Whittington at the hospital on Sunday. Cheney "was pleased to see that he's doing fine and in good spirits," she said.

Armstrong said she was watching from a car while Cheney, Whittington and another hunter got out of the vehicle to shoot at a covey of quail.

Whittington shot a bird and went to retrieve it in the tall grass, while Cheney and the third hunter walked to another spot and discovered a second covey.

Whittington "came up from behind the vice president and the other hunter and didn't signal them or indicate to them or announce himself," Armstrong said.

"The vice president didn't see him," she continued. "The covey flushed and the vice president picked out a bird and was following it and shot. And by God, Harry was in the line of fire and got peppered pretty good."

Whittington has been a private practice attorney in Austin since 1950 and has long been active in Texas Republican politics. He's been appointed to several state boards, including when then-Gov. George W. Bush named him to the Texas Funeral Service Commission.

McBride did not comment about why the vice president's office did not tell reporters about the accident until the next day. She referred the question to Armstrong, who could not be reached again Sunday evening......Read Full Report on CNN.

Ozarks Angel
In Ozarks Angel Dick Cheney accidentally shot his hunting partner today - or yesterday. I think the story was held 24 hours for some reason, perhaps to avoid the Sunday morning talk show circuit. This raises all kinds of questions: 1) What is a guy with all kinds of health problems doing out tromping around with a shotgun?

Intel: 4-Core Chip Comes True in 2007

Not long before, Intel's dual-core chips just stole a lot of spotlights. But now how? Intel: 4-Core Chip Comes True in 2007!!

A Look At Intel's Quad-Core Processors

The first systems powered by dual-core processors are just now going mainstream, and manufacturers are already thinking about quad-core CPUs. And they’re not only thinking, but almost ready to launch them. Or at least Intel is.

Thus, the great Chipzilla announced that it expects to ship its first processor with four cores in early 2007 as the world's top chipmaker races to win back market share, according to Reuters.

Intel also expects to sell 60 million dual-core chips this year, accounting for about a quarter of total processor sales, chief technology officer Justin Rattner told reporters.

"Clearly the momentum around multi-core is building," Rattner said.

The new chip, called Clovertown, bundles four processors in a single package, allowing computers to process data more quickly or run more applications at the same time, while using less power than a single-core design.

Clovertown is aimed at server computers that run corporate networks and host Web sites on the Internet. It will be sold in servers with sockets for two processors, meaning the computers could have as many as eight cores for crunching data.

Rattner, who showed off a computer running two of the first four Clovertown chips produced, declined to say whether all four cores are on a single die, or if Clovertown would use two dual-core chips stuck together.

Multiplying the number of cores brings distinct advantages. First, it cuts down overall energy consumption for equivalent levels of performance. If the recent Core Duo chips released for notebooks from Intel had only one core, the chips would consume far more power, he said, according to CNETnews.com.

Integrating processor cores into the same piece of silicon or same processor package also increases performance by reducing the data pathways.

"To go from core to core can be a matter of nanoseconds," Rattner said. "As soon as you move cores together you get an automatic improvement in available bandwidth."

Nonetheless, adding cores requires careful planning. Energy efficiency, data input/output and memory latency (the time it takes data to go from memory and the processor and vice versa) will be major issues with each level of core expansion.......More! By Axxel of Playfuls.com, Romania

Google Desktop's Evolution Cause Privacy Concerns

Google Desktop evolved from Version 1, Version 2 to now Version 3, it gains many new characteristics and functions. According New on your Desktop, in v. 1 you can quickly find existing information on your own computer; in v. 2, it became easier to organize and find new personalized information from all over the web via the Sidebar; in v.3, you can even also search across multiple computers to find your information. So are you satisfied with these improvements? If yes, then you'd better make some considerations as to the new released v. 3. To have a look at the reports below may not too bad to you!

Privacy fears hit Google search

Google building
Google is increasingly in the spotlight over the issue of privacy
A leading US digital rights campaign group has warned against using Google software which lets people organise and find information on their computers.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation said the latest version of Google Desktop posed a risk to privacy.

This is because a feature in the software lets Google keep personal data on its servers for up to 30 days.

Google says it plans to encrypt all data transferred from users' hard drives and restrict access.

Government snooping

The new version of its desktop search software comes as Google is battling efforts by the US Department of Justice to force it to hand over data about what people are looking for.

We think this will be a very useful tool, but you will have to give up some of your privacy
Marissa Mayer, Google

Some of Google's main competitors have already complied with the request for details about people's search habits.

The case has focused attention on the issue of personal information held by internet companies.

"Coming on the heels of serious consumer concern about government snooping into Google's search logs, it's shocking that Google expects its users to now trust it with the contents of their personal computers," said EFF staff attorney Kevin Bankston.

"Unless you configure Google Desktop very carefully, and few people will, Google will have copies of your tax returns, love letters, business records, financial and medical files, and whatever other text-based documents the desktop software can index.

"The government could then demand these personal files with only a subpoena rather than the search warrant it would need to seize the same things from your home or business," he said.

America's five-time world figure skating champion Michelle Kwan has pulled out of the Winter Olympics because of a groin injury.

Kwan, 25, who has won silver and bronze at previous Olympics, was named in the US squad despite missing the national championships due to injury.

"Taking myself off the team is the most difficult decision I've ever made, but it's the right decision," said Kwan.

"I don't feel I can be at my best. I respect the Games too much to compete."

Michelle means more to the US Olympic Committee than maybe any athlete that's ever performed for us
US Olympic chief Paul Ueberroth

Despite claiming nine US titles, Kwan has never tasted victory at the Games, and realistically this year would have been her final chance.

US Olympic Committee chairman Peter Ueberroth paid tribute to Kwan's honesty, and said she would be a loss to the whole team.

"She's made a courageous decision," he said.

"Michelle means more to the US Olympic Committee than maybe any athlete that's ever performed for us.

"She's been a leader, she's been gracious, she's somebody that cares for so many youngsters that are training in our country."

Her place in the squad will go to Emily Hughes, the third-placed finisher at last month's national championships, who is the sister of 2002 Olympic champion Sarah Hughes.

The 17-year-old will join the two skaters who beat her at the nationals, Sasha Cohen and Kimmie Meissner, in the US team for the competition, which starts on Tuesday.

Cohen said she shared Kwan's disappointment at being forced to withdraw. .......

Hughes Gets a Trip to Turin, After All
